Zakia on Her Latest Phrase, 'Old Timey Movies'

Zakia shares her thoughts on older films, inspired by the discussion with Sean and Steve of the Mostly Horror Podcast.

What does "Old Timey Movies" mean? Haha well it was a phrase I created a while back describing “old movies” from a Gen Z perspective… totally not to offend anyone who is older than me. I feel that films from Tim Burton or Are You Afraid of the Dark? can be examples of "old timey movies." They can resemble the production to feel old. Stranger Things has a great example of how old timey can feel or be like. With the plot being created sometime in the 1980s it gives off that vibe. I hope that my phrase won’t offend anyone (LOL). I will be using it a lot moving forward with Kindergeist, especially if we will watch more old timey movies! (See what I did there)!

The Horror of Being a Woman in 'Ratatouille'

Zakia shares her thoughts inspired by the lack of feminism in the Disney/Pixar animated film, Ratatouille.

What does it mean to be a woman? Well I think it’s awesome being one. You get to dress up, gossip, shop, do your makeup, you know… girly stuff. But this doesn’t have to just be for women. There’s other things about women that we can do. Around the world we have been fighting non stop for basic human rights. Just to be equal. My body my choice. Don’t touch me. I can fix a car too!

Over the years we’ve been framed by men or formed into this shape that women are supposed to be and do something specific. Which isn’t the case. Especially in films with the heavy production of middle aged white males in the film industry, they have the power to create a bias to our brains of how women can be formed as. Which is a terrible thing but it happens.

I hope that in the future men will realize that we are better than just being in the kitchen.

'Poppy Playtime' Review: Dolls, Jump Scares and Puzzles!

Poppy Playtime (2021) is a video game based on a doll that these people sell to kids. You’re trapped in the factory and trying to escape, but there's obstacles trying to not let you through. I recommend Poppy Playtime because it’s not that scary of a game, even the first chapter isn’t even that scary. It’s kind of simple but not really. Kind of. It’s like a puzzle game. The things that I liked about Poppy Playtime is that the jump scares aren’t that scary and it’s just one doll or thing chasing you. That’s why I recommend Poppy Playtime.

Never Mess with a Witch: The Playful Terror of 'The Witches'

I feel like over time, witches have evolved from being these monstrous creatures to these real-life people who do witchcraft… it's kind of amazing. I feel like The Witches (1990) brings out the comedy side of horror. It’s very similar to The Addams Family (1991), NOT because of the same actress (Anjelica Huston) that also played as a main character. But because they have that comedy horror feel to them that may seem childish, at the same time fun! Through-out the film there were many interesting things that occurred such as the baby rolling down the hill to the transformation into a mouse. This film definitely can just give you a prime example as an audience a lesson…TO NEVER MESS WITH A WITCH!!!

Anyways, here are my top 5 favorite witch shows/movies that have changed the perspective of witches over the years:

1. The Witches (1990)
2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
3. Hocus Pocus (1993)
4. The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)
5. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

The Looming Threat of Kidnapping in 'The Black Phone'

What are you scared of? I am scared of spiders, and I very much dislike jump scares. But for some people kidnapping or being kidnapped seems to be a running theme. Over the years, people that are trying to kidnap people… which isn't a good thing… have thought of very complex ways to do it. From tricking a little kid with candy to targeting specific people in cars. Life now with this to worry about can be scary. Take movies like The Black Phone (2022) or Megan is Missing (2011) into account of different strategies horror writers create to make them feel real. Well, maybe it can happen in real life, but we will never know.

The True Meaning of Family in 'The Addams Family'

10/7/2022

As we know, there are different clans in Twilight (2008) or in real life. Whether that be a pack, clan, or, most people know, a family. We were all raised in many different ways and taught different beliefs by people who were our family.

If you believe that family has to always be through blood…then you are wrong. FAMILY *internet meaning* (a group of one or more parents and their children living together as a unit.) Sometimes I don't believe in the internet because the family can be anything. From being close friends for 7 years to having loyalty to each other, it can always be different.

One of the well-renowned Halloween movies named The Addams Family (1991) demonstrates how different family dynamics can overrule the internet meaning of "family." So what can show us our true family?

Loyalty, friendship and happiness.
